About the legs

The legs hold the largest muscles in the body. The quadriceps, on the front of the thigh, straighten the knee. The hamstrings, on the back, bend it and help extend the hip. The glutes extend and rotate the hip from behind, the calves point the foot, and the adductors on the inner thigh draw the legs together.

Most lower-body exercises load several of these at once. Squats and lunges work the quads and glutes by bending both the knee and the hip, hinges such as deadlifts shift the work towards the glutes and hamstrings, and isolation work like leg extensions, leg curls and calf raises trains one group at a time.
