How to do it
- Stand with each foot on a low plate, feet about hip width, holding a barbell against the thighs.
- Lock the hips and knees at the top, brace the trunk, and set the shoulder blades back.
- Push the hips back and slide the bar down the front of the legs.
- Keep only a slight knee bend and the bar in contact with the legs.
- Stop where the hamstrings run out of stretch, then drive the hips forward to stand tall.
- Finish stacked at the top without leaning back, and repeat.
Common mistakes

- Bending the knees into a squat, which unloads the hinge the deficit is there to lengthen.
- Letting the bar drift off the legs, which lengthens the lever on the lumbar spine.
