About the chest
The chest is dominated by the pectoralis major, a broad fan that runs from the collarbone, the sternum and the upper ribs out to the front of the upper arm. Its main job is horizontal adduction: bringing the arm across the body. It also assists shoulder flexion, which is raising the arm forward, and internal rotation. Beneath it sits the smaller pectoralis minor, which pulls the shoulder blade forward and down rather than moving the arm at all.
That anatomy is why two movement families cover the chest. Presses load the muscle while the elbow bends and straightens, and flyes load it through the adduction arc with a straighter arm. Because the upper fibres attach to the collarbone and the lower fibres to the sternum and ribs, changing the angle of the torso shifts which part does more of the work: incline positions favour the clavicular fibres, flat and decline positions the sternal ones. Pressing also recruits the front delts and triceps heavily, which is why chest work rarely happens in isolation.
