About the triceps
The triceps brachii makes up the back of the upper arm and, as the name suggests, has three heads. The lateral and medial heads cross only the elbow. The long head also crosses the shoulder, running up to the shoulder blade. Together they straighten the elbow, and the long head additionally helps pull the arm backwards and towards the body.
That third head is the reason overhead extensions feel different from pushdowns. With the arm raised, the long head is stretched across the shoulder and loaded through a longer range; with the arm at the side, it is shortened and the other two heads do more. Compound pressing trains the triceps hard as an elbow extensor, but it does not put the long head in that lengthened position, which is what dedicated overhead work adds.
