About the lats
The latissimus dorsi is the largest muscle in the back by surface area. It originates across the lower spine, the thoracolumbar fascia and the rim of the pelvis, then narrows into a tendon that attaches to the front of the upper arm. That long line of pull lets it do three things: bring the arm down from overhead, pull it backwards behind the body, and rotate it inwards.
Because the lats attach to the arm rather than the shoulder blade, they respond to where the arm travels rather than to squeezing the shoulder blades together. Pulling down from overhead, as in a pulldown or a pull-up, works the adduction action through its longest range. Pulling towards the torso, as in a row, works shoulder extension and tends to share the load with the mid-back and rear delts. Both belong in a back session for different reasons, and the grip width and torso angle change how much of each you get.
