The front or anterior deltoid runs from the outer third of the collarbone to the upper arm, and it raises the arm forward and upward. It also assists in bringing the arm across the body and rotating it inwards, which is why it works alongside the chest rather than independently of it.
It gets two kinds of work. Overhead pressing loads it as the prime mover through the full range. Horizontal pressing, including every bench press variation, recruits it heavily as an assistant, and incline angles increase that share. Front raises isolate the action but add little that pressing has not already covered, which is why the front delts are usually the best-trained third of the shoulder without anything being aimed at them.
