How to do it

  1. Stand with the feet about hip width and hold one dumbbell by both ends in front of the chest.
  2. Brace the trunk and keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis.
  3. Move the dumbbell in a tight circle around the head, passing it behind the crown.
  4. Keep both hands closed on the same two ends for the whole circle.
  5. Return to the front of the chest and reverse the direction.
  6. Repeat slow, even circles without leaning the torso to make range.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a wide orbit that lets the torso side-bend instead of the shoulders rotating.
  • Arching the lower back to sneak the bell behind the neck.
  • Holding the breath, which stiffens the ribcage the thoracic spine needs to move.
  • Using a bell so heavy that the path jerks and clips the head.
