About the rear delts
The rear or posterior deltoid is the back third of the shoulder muscle, running from the spine of the shoulder blade to the outside of the upper arm. It pulls the arm backwards and out to the side, a movement called horizontal abduction, and assists external rotation. It is the smallest of the three deltoid heads by the work it usually gets, largely because pressing and front raises leave it out entirely.
Movements that train it share one feature: the elbow travels behind the line of the torso with the arm out wide rather than tucked. Reverse flyes, face pulls and wide-grip rows all produce that path. Rows with a narrow, tucked elbow shift the work towards the lats instead, which is why a back session can leave the rear delts largely untouched unless something is chosen specifically for them.
