How to do it

  1. Straddle the belt, start the treadmill and step on once it is moving slowly.
  2. Set a walking speed you can hold comfortably before touching the incline.
  3. Raise the grade in stages until the effort feels sustained but conversational.
  4. Stand tall with your hips under your shoulders and take normal length steps.
  5. Let your arms swing freely rather than gripping the rails for support.
  6. Lower the incline first, then the speed, and walk flat until breathing settles.

Common mistakes

  • Hanging onto the handrails, which unloads the hips and cancels most of the incline effect.
  • Setting a speed too high for the grade, which turns walking into a shuffling run.
  • Leaning the torso into the belt, moving work off the glutes and into the lower back.
  • Jumping straight to maximum grade, which fatigues the calves long before the session ends.
