How to do it
- Step onto the pedals and place one foot in each, keeping your body close to the column.
- Take a handle in each hand at a comfortable height with a slight bend in the elbows.
- Set a short stride length to start, so the pattern stays smooth before you lengthen it.
- Drive the right foot down as the left hand pulls down, keeping the movement contralateral.
- Reverse the pattern immediately so the left foot and right hand drive on the next stride.
- Hold the rhythm for the planned duration, then shorten the stride and slow down before stepping off.
Common mistakes
- Leaning away from the column, which pulls the body out of line and shortens the leg drive.
- Starting with a long stride, which breaks rhythm before the pattern is learned.
- Pulling only with the arms, which wastes the leg drive that makes vertical climbing efficient.
- Setting resistance so high that the stride slows, which turns a cardio piece into slow grinding.

Good to know
- What muscles does the VersaClimber work?
- Mainly the glutes, quads and upper back. It also works the abs, biceps, calves and front delts.
- What equipment do you need for the VersaClimber?
- It uses a machine. Without it, the Backstroke Swim and the Breaststroke Swim train the same muscles the same way.
- Is the VersaClimber good for beginners?
- GymVim rates it intermediate. For a beginner-rated exercise on the same muscle and movement, see the Arc Trainer.
