How to do it
- Step onto the machine while the steps are stationary and select a low starting speed.
- Stand tall with your chest up and your gaze forward rather than down at the steps.
- Rest your hands lightly on the rails for balance instead of leaning your weight into them.
- Step onto the middle of each step and drive through the whole foot, not just the toes.
- Let the trailing leg extend fully at the hip before you lift it into the next step.
- Hold that rhythm for the planned duration, then lower the speed and step off while it is slow.
Common mistakes
- Hanging on the handrails, which unloads the legs and makes the displayed workload meaningless.
- Taking short toe-only steps, which cuts out the hip extension that makes the machine effective.
- Hunching forward over the console, which shortens the stride and loads the lower back.
- Starting at a fast step rate, which becomes unsustainable quickly given how demanding the stepmill is.
