How to do it

  1. Stand tall facing the travel direction with the feet together and the arms at the sides.
  2. Step forward into a long lunge until the front thigh is near parallel and the back knee is low.
  3. Keep the front foot flat and the front knee stacked over the mid-foot.
  4. Rotate the torso toward the front leg, letting both arms travel with the ribs.
  5. Unwind to face forward, then push through the front foot and step through.
  6. Repeat on the other leg and keep walking as you alternate.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting from the knee instead of from the ribs, which wrenches the front leg.
  • Letting the front knee travel past the toes or cave inward in the lunge.
  • Rushing the twist before the lunge stance is stable.
  • Collapsing the chest so the rotation comes from a rounded spine.
