How to do it
- Load the leg press with a weight you can control through the full ankle range and take a seat.
- Set the seat so your hips stay down and your lower back stays supported against the pad.
- Place your feet about shoulder width apart on the platform and extend the legs, leaving the safety stops engaged.
- Slide your feet down until only the balls of the feet contact the base of the platform and the heels hang free.
- Lower the heels by dorsiflexing the ankles until the calves are fully stretched, without bouncing at the bottom.
- Drive the platform back by extending the ankles, pause at the top, then repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Common mistakes
- Repositioning the feet at the base of the platform with the safety stops off, which risks losing control of the sled.
- Bending and extending the knees to move the weight, which turns the exercise back into a leg press.
- Bouncing out of the bottom stretch instead of controlling the descent through the ankle.
- Locking the knees out hard, which loads the back of the knee joint rather than the calves.
