How to do it

  1. Stand on a stable step with the balls of both feet on the edge and the heels free.
  2. Hold a rail or similar support lightly for balance.
  3. Rise onto the balls of both feet until the ankles are fully plantarflexed.
  4. Slowly lower the heels below the level of the step, keeping the knees nearly straight.
  5. Pause at the bottom stretch, then rise again with both legs.
  6. Keep the torso upright and do not bounce out of the bottom.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the heels in a fall instead of controlling the eccentric.
  • Bending the knees so the soleus takes over before the set calls for it.
  • Letting the feet roll onto the outer edges of the step.
  • Pushing off the support with the arms so the calves unload.
