How to do it

  1. Sit lengthwise on a flat bench with both thighs supported and the feet past the end.
  2. Clamp one short dumbbell handle between the inner edges of both forefeet.
  3. Plant both hands on the bench beside the hips and keep the knees nearly straight.
  4. Pull the toes toward the shins so the clamped dumbbell rises with both feet.
  5. Pause at the top, then point the toes down to lower the load under control.
  6. Keep the torso still and do not let the dumbbell roll off the feet.

Common mistakes

  • Resting the dumbbell loosely on top of the toes instead of clamping the handle.
  • Bending the knees or lifting the thighs so the hips do the work.
  • Using a jerking bounce instead of a slow dorsiflexion and lower.
  • Letting the heels drop so far that the load slips out from between the feet.
