How to do it

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand hanging at your sides.
  2. Set your feet about hip-width apart and brace your abdominals.
  3. Step one foot straight back, landing on the ball of that foot with the heel lifted.
  4. Bend both knees until the rear knee is just above the floor and both sit near 90 degrees.
  5. Push through the front foot to return to standing without leaning the torso back.
  6. Reset your stance and repeat on the other leg.

Common mistakes

  • Taking too short a step, which crowds the front knee forward over the toes.
  • Letting the front knee cave inward as you drive up.
  • Leading the stand-up with the shoulders and hyperextending the spine.
  • Turning the rear foot out instead of keeping it pointed forward.
